Screen Burn: Causes, Prevention, and How to Fix It

What is Screen Burn?

Screen burn, also called screen burn-in, ghost image, or display burns are images or icons that are displayed on a screen when they should not be there. Screen burn comes on gradually and gets worse over time. We commonly see screen burn on OLED screens in the form of the bottom home button menu, the top status bar, or home screen apps “burned” into the display.

You’re probably wondering how or why you never noticed it before on your phone. There are a few reasons for this. 1. Screen burn is easiest to notice on an all white blank screen with no icons on it. SmartphonesPLUS has industry leading phone diagnosis software and other tools that allow us to see phone screens on an all white screen, along with other tests, to examine each phone we receive thoroughly. 2. You look at the same phone, with the same background all day every day and don’t necessarily notice the screen burn occurring. Here’s an example we think relates to screen burn to help explain why it’s not as noticeable. When you see a person every day that is losing weight you don’t notice how much weight they lost, but if you saw a person you haven’t seen in over a year that lost 100 pounds you would notice right away. In the same way, your eyes and mind adjust to the screen burn as it gradually burns into the display over months or years.

What Causes Screen Burn?

Screen burn is caused by pixels displaying the same image or icon for an extended period of time. Static images such as apps, navigation bars, and keyboards can deteriorate areas of the display from overuse. This leaves these over-used pixels looking darker in color than the rest. Certain images and areas of the screen like status bars are more susceptible to screen burn as they are constantly displaying the same image.

Here are a few examples:

Screen burn on the navigation bar of the Google Pixel 2:

The bottom navigation bar, top status bar, and keyboard screen burn on Samsung Galaxy display:

“Ghost image” screen burn of apps on a white screen of an iPhone X:

As you can tell from the photos, screen burn can make the display look discolored with pink or gray hues. Because of its gradual onset, many users don’t even realize their display has screen burn. With normal usage, it may be difficult to see, but it generally becomes more noticeable on a white background.

How Can You Prevent Screen Burn?

Change the Image on Your Screen

You can avoid the deterioration of pixels in your display by not overusing the same ones over and over. Try to change the positions of apps and backgrounds periodically.

Lower Your Brightness

Lowering the brightness will lengthen the life of the pixels in your display. Keeping the brightness as low as possible will ensure that screen burn won’t happen as quickly.

Do Not Use Screen Savers

Avoid screen savers when your screen times out as they are generally static images that are displayed for a long period of time. Screen savers will cause the pixel of you display to be overworked when you are not even using your device. If you have a phone that uses Always on Display, make sure to turn this off so the phone is on a black screen and is not showing images at all times.

How To Fix Screen Burn

There are some apps and videos out there that claim they can fix screen burn, however, the results tend to be insignificant. The only way to truly fix screen burn is to replace the entire display of the phone. We hope that in the future consumer electronics companies can design and manufacture more screen burn resistant displays so that we can all enjoy screen burn free devices.

The iPhone 12 Release: What’s New, Prices, Colors, Highest Trade In

iPhone 12 Is Here! What’s new?

Apple has finally released its highly-anticipated iPhones of 2020. So what’s new with all the latest iPhone 12’s? The new iPhone 12 lineup comes with the fastest chipset ever in the iPhone, stunning OLED displays, and all models have the 5G Ultra Wideband cellular connectivity which was hinted at before the Apple release event. They teased 5G before the event with the theme name” Hi, Speed.” Apple had a few surprises up their sleeve with new colors and other unique upgrades.

4 Different Models: iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max

Apple has announced the release of its flagship iPhones which includes 4 new models – the most ever. They are the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. It seems as though Apple has made an iPhone for everyone. Let’s dive into a brief introduction to each before getting to the price of each iPhone 12 and where to get the highest trade in value for your old iPhone.

iPhone 12 mini Specs

First up is the iPhone 12 mini. Apple has created an iPad mini, a Mac mini, and now an iPhone mini. It is just as it sounds – an iPhone, but just mini. It has all the great features and the same sleek design as the iPhone 12 just in a more pocket-friendly size. It has a dual-camera system similar to the iPhone 11, but expect some software changes that will boost the quality of images and video.

iPhone 12 Specs

Now, the iPhone 12 is most similar to popular iPhones we’ve come to be familiar with in prior years like the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR. Like these models and the new mini iPhone, the iPhone 12 still has the aluminum body. The only major difference is that the frame is sharper around the edges instead of having rounded curves. Many say it reminds them of some older models of iPhone with this design including the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 4.

What are the iPhone 12 Colors?

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 come in 5 different colors: White, Black, Green, (PRODUCT) RED, and all-new Blue.

iPhone 12 Pro Specs

Apple has also released 2 Pro models similar to last year. This year’s iPhone 12 Pro comes in a stainless steel, flat edge frame design with a 3 camera system. Like the others in the iPhone 12 series, the 12 Pro also has 5G connectivity and an OLED Super Retina XDR display that has a slightly higher pixel density than last year’s iPhone 11 Pro (460 PPI vs 458 PPI). The iPhone 12 Pro will have internal storage starting at 128GB vs the base 64GB of last year. It will also come in 256GB and 512GB models.

iPhone 12 Pro Max Specs

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is, of course, a bit bigger than the others in the 12 series. It has a 6.7-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display. For comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro has a 6.1-inch display. Its triple camera system has a 2.5x optical zoom and digital zoom up to 12x while the iPhone 12 Pro’s camera has 2x and 10x, respectively. So, if the camera is important to you you may want to consider the 12 Pro Max. Because of its bigger size, it also has the space for a bigger battery which gives the 12 Pro Max a 3-hour video playback time advantage over the 12 Pro.

What are the iPhone 12 Pro Colors?

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will come in pacific blue, gold, graphite, and silver.

iPhone 12 Price

The iPhone 12 mini will start at $699 while the iPhone 12 will cost $100 more at $799. The iPhone 12 Pro will start at $999 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1099. Of course, the higher GB storage sizes will cost even more. None of the iPhone 12’s come with expandable storage. Other iPhones like the iPhone 11 & iPhone XR have seen a drop in price. Check out the online store to get the best prices on iPhones.

Looking for the highest trade in for the iPhone 12 online?

As with all iPhones, you can trade-in or sell your iPhone 12 online for the best trade in value with SmartphonesPLUS. You can sell your iPhone even if it is used, cracked, financed, or broken. SmartphonesPLUS ensures an easy process with transparent instant online quotes, free shipping, and the fastest payment speed in the industry. You can even get a free box and shipping materials sent to you for free! Simply click Sell on the homepage to get started.
